NFT utility
Collectibles sold with promised future benefits — access, experiences, revenue, governance — most of which failed because the issuer had no operating capacity to deliver what the token entitled its holder to.
The verdict
A claim nobody can fulfil is not a claim.
What it had
- Enforceable scarcity, genuinely
- Strong communities and distribution
- Working provenance and transfer
Listed first, deliberately. The failure is only instructive once it is clear how much was working.
What happened
Ownership and provenance worked. This is worth stating clearly, because it is the part that was technically sound and remains so.
What did not work was the utility. Benefits were promised by teams with no supply chain, no operating business and no capacity to deliver at the scale they had sold. The token was a claim on an operator that could not honour it.
Holders discovered they owned a verifiable receipt for an unfulfillable promise — which is a precise description of the failure and explains why the collections that survived were the ones that promised nothing.
What would have changed it
A redemption path backed by real supply. An entitlement is only worth the operator’s ability to deliver it, and that capacity has to exist before the entitlement is sold.
The lesson. Provenance was solved. Fulfilment was not attempted. The category confused the first for the second.
Where we stood
A post-mortem written by someone who was not in the room is commentary. This section says what the group actually held, built or sold during the cycle above.
GDA Capital co-founded NFT BAZL in May 2021 and ran four exhibitions — Miami, MENA’s first NFT art exhibition, and an in-world edition in Decentraland — alongside a boutique marketplace. What the group learned from operating it is the entry above: the provenance layer worked, and the provenance layer was the whole product. There was no second act for the holder, because nobody had built one.
