SocialFi
Social platforms with tokenised participation, where influence and access were tradeable, which failed to retain participants because standing did not travel and had nothing to accumulate into.
The verdict
Identity without portability is a login.
What it had
- Genuine social graphs
- Tradeable participation and real liquidity
- Strong initial engagement
Listed first, deliberately. The failure is only instructive once it is clear how much was working.
What happened
Early engagement was strong and the mechanics were novel: influence became a position, attention became priceable, and for a period the loop worked.
What never formed was standing. Reputation earned on the platform stayed on the platform, so participants had nothing accumulating and nothing to defend. Each new competitor started everyone at zero, which meant switching cost was approximately nil.
The result was a sequence of platforms with steep adoption and steeper decay, and a population that migrated as a bloc. Nobody was a citizen anywhere.
What would have changed it
Portable standing. Reputation and history that travel with the holder and are verifiable elsewhere convert a user into a member — and give them something that is lost by leaving.
The lesson. Financialising a social graph without portable identity produces a market, not a community. Markets rotate.
Where we stood
A post-mortem written by someone who was not in the room is commentary. This section says what the group actually held, built or sold during the cycle above.
The group acquired the SocialFi platform at the centre of this cycle — a storytelling and video product with more than 2.5 million users — and relaunched it inside Flashy on rails that already existed. That is the correction stated as a transaction: the audience was never the missing piece, and buying it was cheap precisely because everyone had concluded it was.
